Initially I had an idea, after playing many rounds of last card, to incorporate the four card suits into a series of wallpaper.
After doing some not so reliable research on Wikipedia I found that cartomancy describes each suit as follows:Heart - love, emotion or spirituality
Diamond - material possessions and physical well-being
Club - inner wisdom, industriousness and creative enthusiasm
Spade - adversity and challenge.
These descriptions are all relevant to being a first year design student so I drew up some mock sketches and created some ugly and boring looking wallpaper.
So I thought on...
... and remembered this photograph I had taken the other week.
This photo was taken at Erskine College, formerly an all girl's boarding school built in 1905. It's eerie grounds and nightmarish buildings offer effective site locations to films such as Peter Jackson's 'The Frighteners'.
I saw these grounds being relevant to first year design as it can be scary at times but once you have become familiar with everything it is not frightening at all (I grew up next to Erskine College and find it one of the most fascinating locations in Wellington). I also viewed the pathway leading to the gate as the pathway to second year.
So I began to draw.
