Programming the bigger picture.
Notes.
- Programming is not used to create complicated static images or animations.
- It is useful for generative animations which changes every time it is run and is constantly updating and evolving.
- Variation.
- Interaction.
- Generation.
- Repetition.
- Calculation.
- Scalability.
- Code is essentially a list of instructions and rules for the computer to follow.
- Always acknowledge who and where you sourced from.
Reflection.
What have you learnt so far, what helped and motivated you to learn?
So far I have learnt the basics of coding including variables and loops. Watching how things are done in studios as well as the reading the tutorials helped me to learn. Open processing motivates me as I discover different pieces of code, then come up with an idea in my head and try to work out how that idea would work through code. I have also learnt that you must save the file as a pdf through code!
Is there anything that you want to improve in your next project?
I would like to do something less detailed but still effective, something that would turn out better than my hand drawn sketch, as opposed to the other way round. I will also ensure that my print-outs were of a high standard.
Goal and Plan.
My goal is to create something I really like and have sufficient time to work on it, to develop it as best as I can. I will do this through better time management and playing around with different codes on Open Processing.

FINAL WALLPAPER DESIGNS
Due to some hiccups regarding pdf files, pixelation and printing below are my new Wallpaper designs.
Please note these are not pdf. files as blogger does not allow pdf. files to be uploaded.

Wallpaper - Project One.
Here are my finished wallpaper panels:

Panel Four

Note: This is just a screen shot so there are shadow marks that don't actually exist.
You can find these on OpenProcessing here.
Thinking and creating - Project One.
I started to experiment with different ideas to get an idea of how I would go about creating an effect like the one in my sketch.
First I had the idea to just put a brown (boring) background:

Then I saw Ben Jack's pattern and thought about using it as a background for my wallpaper so I began to experiment with this idea:

Processing - Project One.
I knew it was going to be difficult to get the same effect on processing but after playing around for a while I found that by using 'curveVertex' I could get a similar effect.

Interim presentation - Project One.
After spending a few hours drawing different ideas, I came up with the idea to have the four wallpaper panels link together to make one image.
This poorly scanned image represents three quarters of my sketch.

I knew straight away that it would be too complicated to complete in processing but I still really liked the idea. I then decided to roll with the idea of just two trees across four panels so focused more on this part of my sketch.

Obviously I would have to tone down the complexity of this picture and go easy on the detail.
Inspiration - Project One.
Initially I had an idea, after playing many rounds of last card, to incorporate the four card suits into a series of wallpaper.
After doing some not so reliable research on Wikipedia I found that cartomancy describes each suit as follows:Heart - love, emotion or spirituality
Diamond - material possessions and physical well-being
Club - inner wisdom, industriousness and creative enthusiasm
Spade - adversity and challenge.
These descriptions are all relevant to being a first year design student so I drew up some mock sketches and created some ugly and boring looking wallpaper.
So I thought on...
... and remembered this photograph I had taken the other week.
This photo was taken at Erskine College, formerly an all girl's boarding school built in 1905. It's eerie grounds and nightmarish buildings offer effective site locations to films such as Peter Jackson's 'The Frighteners'.
I saw these grounds being relevant to first year design as it can be scary at times but once you have become familiar with everything it is not frightening at all (I grew up next to Erskine College and find it one of the most fascinating locations in Wellington). I also viewed the pathway leading to the gate as the pathway to second year.
So I began to draw.

Four Sketches.
This first sketch is a clearly specified one based on a hand drawn sketch done in class. It consists simply of a one across one down motion, or four lines repeated in each repeated box.

This second sketch is one I found most interesting. It consists of many triangles and a long list of code which next time hopefully will be shortened when I work out function loops and variables.

This sketch consists of lines, triangles and quads to resemble origami cranes. I find this to be the most beautiful as it is very simple consisting of only white lines yet creates a shape which is identifiable.

This last post is made up of a series of different sized ellipses but with the same x and y coordinates.
